Surrender is the first painting in a three part series, preceding Agape and Rise. The series explores themes of depression, survival and hope.

In Surrender, we feel the weight of a darkness that keeps our central figure trapped out of reach of the surface. Close enough to see and feel the light but without the energy to reach it, we are open to interpret the work in a number of ways – do you find your focus settling on the figure’s surrender to the depths, or on the light that breaks through above them?

Without the energy to kick, to swim, to survive, experiences of depression can feel isolating and suffocating. Continue the journey into the survival themes of Agape here, and the warmth and hope of Rise here.
